First Year Students

WELCOME from Fr. Chris Rehagen, CSC, Rector

July 2017

Dear O’Neill Family Hall Class of 2021,

Congratulations on your acceptance into Notre Dame and welcome to O’Neill Family  Hall!  I’m very excited that you will be joining the Mob in the Fall.  Here at Notre Dame, residential life is at the heart of what we do.  Despite the fact that each one of us was randomly assigned to the Hall, we will form a family that supports each other not just during your time at Notre Dame but also after graduation.  As I was told when I began as a student at Notre Dame, the friends you make in the dorm and elsewhere at Notre Dame will be your friends for life, both in good times and in bad.  They truly will become a second family for you.

As with any family, each one of us has a special role to play.  Over the next year, you will hear me repeatedly challenge you to take an active role in our hall.  I hope you take this challenge seriously!  Each one of you brings unique gifts and talents to Notre Dame, and we need them all if we are going to become the best family that we can be. Whether it’s serving as a musician, lector or Eucharistic Minister at Mass, participating in Hall Government, playing an interhall sport or getting involved in some other way, we need you!  Your involvement will help both you and others have the best possible Notre Dame experience.

Most new freshman are curious about their rector, so let me tell you a little bit about myself.  I’m originally from Jefferson City, MO and a 2009 graduate of Notre Dame.  I lived in Alumni Hall during my four years at Notre Dame and loved my time in the dorm.  Following graduation, I entered Moreau Seminary (on campus here at Notre Dame) and was ordained a Holy Cross Priest in April 2015.  I served a year as the Associate Pastor of Christ the King Parish in South Bend, IN before beginning as rector of O’Neill in August 2016.  I enjoyed my time in O’Neill last year and am looking forward to my second year in the role.

In addition to me, O’Neill is staffed by two assistant rectors and seven resident assistants. The ARs are A.J. Martinez and Karl Romkema, CSC.  Both are great guys and will be good resources for you during your first year at Notre Dame.  The RAs are all seniors and most have lived in O’Neill for their entire time at Notre Dame.  I know they are excited to get to know you.

I look forward to meeting all of you in August.  If you have any questions before then, feel free to send me an email.  Enjoy the rest of the summer and know of my prayers for you as you prepare to transition to Notre Dame.  It’s going to be a great four years!
