First Year Students

WELCOME from Fr. Chris Rehagen, CSC, Rector

July 2016

Dear O’Neill Hall Class of 2020,

Congratulations on your acceptance into Notre Dame and welcome to O’Neill Hall!  I’m very excited that you will be joining the Mob in the Fall.  Here at Notre Dame, residential life is at the heart of what we do.  Despite the fact that each one of us was randomly assigned to the Hall, we will form a family that supports each other not just during your time at Notre Dame but also after graduation.  The friends you make in the dorm will be your friends for life, both in good times and in bad.  They truly will become a second family for you.

As with any family, each one of us has a special role to play.  Over the next year, you will hear me challenge you repeatedly to take an active role in our hall.  I hope you take this challenge to heart.  Each one of you brings unique gifts and talents to Notre Dame, and we need them all if we are going to become the best family that we can be. Whether it’s serving as a musician, lector or Eucharistic Minister at Mass, participating in Hall Government, playing an interhall sport or getting involved in some other way, we need you!  Your involvement will help both you and others have a true Notre Dame experience.

Most new freshman are curious about their rector, so let me tell you a little bit about myself.  I’m originally from Jefferson City, MO and a 2009 graduate of Notre Dame.  I lived in Alumni Hall during my time at Notre Dame and loved my time in the dorm.  Following graduation, I entered Moreau Seminary (on the campus of Notre Dame) and was ordained a Holy Cross Priest in April 2015.  I then served as the Associate Pastor at Christ the King Parish here in South Bend.  Just last month, I was assigned to serve as the rector of O’Neill, so this will be my first year as rector.  O’Neill has a reputation as one of the most fun and close-knit dorms on campus, and I hope that continues during my time as rector.

In addition to me, O’Neill will be staffed by two assistant rectors and seven resident assistants.  The two ARs, Tom and AJ, are both law students and will be great resources for you as you transition to Notre Dame..  The RAs are all seniors and longtime residents of O’Neill.  They will serve as mentors and guides for you.

I look forward to meeting all of you in August.  If you have any questions before then, feel free to send me an email.  Enjoy the rest of the summer and know of my prayers for you as you prepare to transition to the greatest University in the world, the University of Notre Dame.  It’s going to be a great four years!

Sincerely,

Fr. Chris Rehagen, CSC
